James: Wisdom for the Community is unavailable, but you can change that!

The epistle of James is one of the most controversial included in the canon of the New Testament. Why the controversy? James (almost certainly Jesus’ brother) sets out in his letter to deal with the problem of a church that does church—yet really does nothing! James is forthright in spelling out some home truths to his readers.

1:9 to denote a proper boasting or exaltation in response to God’s perspective. Here, however, their glorying is presumptuous bragging about their plans rather than humble submission of those plans to God, who alone can determine what tomorrow holds. As if their boastful attitudes were not enough, James adds that such attitudes are full of ‘arrogance.’ The noun (alazoniais) is plural, indicating that they repeatedly boasted this way.
